Topics and articles are the most important content units of knowledge base. Therefore, being able to manage them is very important. In this guide we’ll learn how to add and edit knowledge base articles and organise them into topics. You’ll see that adding articles is almost identical to adding posts in WordPress.

This tutorial has a video version, scroll to bottom of article to watch it.

Creating topics

Let’s start from topics, so that we add content logically, top to bottom. For this example we will create topic “Getting started”. First of all, from the left menu select Knowledge BaseTopics. As a result, topics list screen will appear. It is very similar to categories edit screen for standard WordPress posts. To create topic, type Name, Slug and (optionally) Description of your topic and press Add New Topic button.

Name is topic name, Slug is used for topic pages URL creation and Description may be displayed on some template pages. Also, you may as well specify Parent topics, to build nested structures, but for this tutorial we’ll keep it blank.

You don’t have to specify Topic slug every time, WordPress will generate it for you. Just make sure the generated slug is good for your SEO strategy, so you don’t have to edit it later and set redirects.

After you hit Add New Topic, your topic will be created and added to the list on the right hand of topics screen. Go ahead and click on topic name to see it’s options.

As you can see, it is possible to set custom color, icon or image for each topic. You can also separate knowledge base into multiple pages, selecting Topic Knowledge Base Home option. We will not tweak any of these settings now, this is just so you know where to find them.

Adding knowledge base articles

Next we’ll add an article. In the left menu select Knowledge BaseAdd New. After that, new article screen will appear, similar to new post screen. Here you’ll need to set the title, write some content, select our Getting started topic (or add new one) on the right side and add one or more tags (optional), same as with creating posts.
